Scene  1: Opening

In the White Tower, Moiraine prepares for a journey. Throughout her narration, she dresses in traveling clothes, and gathers items: her dagger, a map, a small figurine of a man, etc.

Moiraine: The world is broken.

[voices whispering]

Moiraine: Many, many years ago, men who were born with great power believed they could cage Darkness itself. The arrogance. When they failed, the seas boiled, mountains were swallowed up, cities burned, and the women of the Aes Sedai were left to pick up the pieces. These women remembered one thing above all else... the man who brought the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon. Now, this man has been born again. We don't know where or to whom. If he was reborn as a girl or a boy. The only thing we know for certain is that this child is coming of age now, and we must find them... before the Dark does.

Moiraine and Lan walk down the hall, leaving.

Scene 2 : Chase

Two men run down a dirt road, an older and a younger one.

One of the men : Hurry up!

They are chased by four women in red on horseback.

One of the Red Sisters : Hyah! Hyah!
Liandrin: Stop! I said stop!

The men approach an opening in the cliff. Liandrin reaches forward, and rocks fall, blocking the path. The women catch up to the men.

Old man: We can't die like this. You can fight them. Use it.
Logain Ablar: Don't hurt him. It's not his fault.
Liandrin: Who are you talking about? There's one else here.

The young man looks around. The older man is gone, and he's alone.

Liandrin: The madness already has him.

Liandrin dismounts.

Liandrin: You see, what we've come here do... it's a gift. You should thank me, really. This Power... it's meant for women... ...and women alone. And when you touch it... you make it filthy.
Logain Ablar: Please. No. Please
Liandrin: Sisters.
Logain Ablar: Please, no. No! Please! [screaming]

Scene 3 : Cliff

The man's screams echo up a cliff, where Moiraine and Lan stand looking down at the scene.

Moiraine: It's not him.

Moiraine returns to her horse. The screaming stops.

Lan: He was born 20 years ago, almost to the day the prophecy of the Dragon Reborn predicted. He's able to touch the Source.
Moiraine: It's not him.
Lan: [sighs] Where next?
Moiraine: The Two Rivers. There are rumors of four ta'veren there, all the right age. The Old Blood runs deep in those mountains. Let's hope it's prepared them for what's coming.

Scene 4 : Opening title sequence

Scene 5 : Women's Circle - On a cliff

A line of women walk through a secluded and beautiful mountainous region. Above a river, three women sit. Egwene is getting her hair braided.

Nynaeve: This braid will remind you that you are a part of us and we a part of you. To be a woman is to be always alone and never alone. So when the Dark surrounds you and you see no Light, feel this braid and know that we all stood before you. We all stand with you. As Wisdom of the Two Rivers, it's my honor to welcome you to the Women's Circle. [a silence] Be strong, Egwene. Trust the river.

Nynaeve pushes her, and Egwene falls off the edge of the cliff, screaming, into the river.

Scene 7: The river

Egwene surfaces and sputters as she's swept downstream. She struggles with the current, but eventually relaxes, calmly letting the river take her along. She emerges on the river bank and collapses, exhausted. She clutches her braid and looks at it, and lies on the bank, still panting.

Scene 8 : Mountain road

Tam: I remember when this road was just a little deer path, winding down the mountain.
Rand: How'd you get the wool to town?
Tam: Carried it.
Rand: And the brandy?
Tam: [chuckles] That stayed home. Your mother could drink.
[distant howl]
Rand: More wolves now.
Something's been pushing them down from the mountain.
Tam: When you were just tiny, we'd let you out in these woods alone to look for berries. You'd always save a basket of them in the barn to take to Egwene.
[sighs]
Rand: Sounds like I used to be a real sap.
[chuckling]

Scene 9 :  Winespring Inn

Bran: The Coplins and Congars were worried we might be without apple brandy this Bel Tine.
Tam: Wouldn't want them to remember a minute of it.
[laughter]
Mat: Right. Gentlemen, and lady, I want to thank you all very much for bearing with me tonight. Can't imagine it's been easy to part with all your money, but...
[others groaning]
Danya: You'll get 'em next time, Mat.
Mat: Next time? How about right now? Eh? Anyone?
Rand: You don't have anything left to bet.
Perrin : Come on. Sit down.
Rand: How are you? How're the girls?
Mat: You can spot me. One game, three of us. Old time's sake, eh?
Perrin: Come on. We're talking.
Mat: About what? You're married, your life's over. And Rand's pining over Egwene, cold in the mountains, only the sheep to keep him warm.
Perrin: Did you hear already?
Rand: Hear what?
Perrin: A few folks went down to Taren Ferry with the wool last week. Town was full of soldiers and mercenaries headed south.
Rand: Why?
Perrin: They said there's a war in Ghealdan.
Mat: In Ghealdan? Who cares? It was Callie Coplin told you that, wasn't it?
Perrin: So?
Mat: She'd piss in your mouth and tell you it was raining.
[all chuckling]
Mat: So, come on. Let's play.

Mat shakes the dice. They laugh, and Rand shakes his head.

Mat: No?
Rand: [laughs] No.
Mat: No?

Perrin shakes his head.

Mat: Okay, fine. Enough of you guys. Danya.

Mat gets up and walks toward Danya.

Rand: How much money did he lose today?
Perrin: I lost count, but it was more than enough.

Women at another table clap and cheer. Rand looks toward the door as Egwene steps in.

Bran: My girl. You're back. I was worried that...

Egwene hugs him.

Bran: Come on, then. We're losing a coin for every empty hand here.
Daise: No! You drink with us tonight. Marin! A drink for your daughter! Cheers, everybody. -
Clients : [laughter] Cheers!

Rand looks down and turns back to Perrin.

That night. Thunder rumbles. There's lively chatter and women laughing. Egwene is now helping her family serve drinks. Perrin joins Rand, who's leaning against a wall and looking across the room at Egwene.

Perrin: How did her ceremony go today?
Rand: I don't know, actually. We, uh... We haven't talked yet.
Perrin: I'm sure she's just busy.
Rand: Yeah, yeah. I'm sure.

The door opens. The room goes quiet as everyone turns to see a man walk in. Nynaeve stands and approaches, her hand on her dagger.

Nynaeve: Name yourself, stranger.
Lan: Lan Mandragoran. This is Moiraine.

Moiraine enters.

Marin: Milady, can I help you?
Moiraine: We'll need stables for our horses and a room for the night. Two beds and fresh linen. That's all we need.

Moiraine raises her hand and Marin sees her ring.

Marin: Of course, Moiraine Sedai.

There's quiet murmuring. Moiraine warms herself by the fire and looks around, seeing Egwene, Mat, Rand, and Perrin.

Marin: If you'll come this way.

Moiraine and Lan follow Marin to their rooms.

Perrin: She looks like a normal person. I don't know, I...
Rand: Quiet. Who knows what she can hear? Maybe she's headed to the war in the south? In the stories, they say one Aes Sedai can turn a battle on her own.
Nynaeve: I don't care where she's going to, but we'll all be happier and safer when she's there. Where's Laila? Probably at the forge. Iron's hard to work alone.
Perrin: Give Egwene my best.

Nynaeve nods and Perrin leaves.

Scene 10 : Forge

Laila works alone at the forge.

Perrin: What are you doing in here? Everyone is at the inn.

Laila continues working.

Perrin: They said you didn't even go to her ceremony.

Perrin holds her.

Perrin: I love you.
Laila: I know.

Scene 11 : In front of the Inn and at the Cauthons home

Mat walks outside.

Mat: Mum? Mum, what are you doing here?
Natti: Same thing as anyone else.
Mat: Where's Dad?
Natti: Huh. Right where the whole town could see him. The prick.
Mat: Who's with the girls?
Natti: That pig!
Mat: Come on. Time to go home, Mum.
Natti: I will go wherever I want.
Mat: Please.

Inside their home, two little girls, Bode and Eldrin, play with straw-figure dolls.

Bode : How are you?

Mat comes in with Natti.

Eldrin: Matty, is Mum sick again?
Natti: I'm fine, you little bi...
Mat: She's all right. Don't worry.

Mat gets Natti into bed and pulls a cover over her.

Natti: You're going to be just like your dad. I know it. Damn prick like him. [sobbing softly]
Mat: [to the girls] Hey. How about you two sleep with me tonight, instead of Mum and Dad?

Bode and Eldrin smile and nod.

Mat: Yeah? Cheers. Come on, then.

Mat sets up a bed on the other side of a room for them, and he blows out a candle.

Scene 12 : Winespring Inn

Late that night, Marin, Bran, Tam, Egwene, and Rand are cleaning up the common room.

Marin: A thousand wars have washed over the lands down-mountain, and Two Rivers folk don't have any more need to pay attention now than before. War is just fools killing other fools for foolish causes.
Tam: Aes Sedai don't fight wars. They pull the strings of the world from their White Tower. And if one of them's here...
Bran: Then she'll enjoy Bel Tine tomorrow like the rest of us.
[departing footsteps] - [dishes rattling]
Marin : Rand, Egwene, why don't you two finish up the dishes?
Egwene and Rand : Of course.

Rand: You've been avoiding me.
Egwene: Or biding my time until I could get you alone?
Rand: How'd it go today?
[scoffs] - [water splashing]
Egwene: You know I can't talk about...
Rand: It's me. You can at least say if it was good or bad.
Egwene: It was... good.
[chuckles softly]
Egwene: I'm sorry, it's just... I'm thinking about something that Nynaeve...

Rand: You know... my dad said I used to pick baskets of berries to bring to you when I was a kid. Like some lovesick puppy.
[chuckles]
Egwene: Mm. Sounds sweet to me.
[Egwene chuckles softly]
Egwene: Has that been in your pocket all day?
Rand: Maybe. [chuckles softly]
Egwene: Come here.

Scene 14 - Winespring Inn - Bathroom

Moiraine sits in a large tub. Lan steps into the water with her.

Lan: [sighs] It could be warmer.
Moiraine: I'm impressed they have this at all.
Lan: It could be warmer.

Moiraine moves her hand over the water, and steam rises.

Moiraine: Better?
Lan: Much.

Moiraine chuckles softly. Then she sighs in thought.

Lan: What is it? ... You think it's one of them? ... Which one?

Scene 15 : Winespring Inn

Egwene sits before the fireplace, naked and wrapped in a blanket. A door closes behind her and Rand walks in.

Rand: You let me fall asleep.
Egwene: You act as if I had some say in the matter.
Rand: What happened out there today?
Egwene: It wasn't today. It was before. Nynaeve. She asked me to become her apprentice, to study to be a Wisdom someday.
Rand: What? No, you...
Egwene: She asked. I didn't say yes or no.
Rand: Really.
Egwene: She thinks I'll be able to listen to the wind if I work with her.
Rand: It's a lonely life, being a Wisdom. No husband. No kids. I should get up to bed.
Egwene: Rand.

As Egwene sits at the fireplace, she turns away at the howl of wind.

Outside, rain is pouring and the village center is empty. A lone rider approaches. It's black hood is pulled down, covering its eyes. The music has a whistling sound.

Scene 16 : Eamon's Field

Padan Fain rides his wagon into town, whistling. Children run up excitedly calling for sweets.

Padan Fain: Merry Bel Tine! Merry Bel Tine! No. No sweet sticks for you. [laughing]

Tam is sitting at a table outside, working on a lantern. Egwene brings him a tray of food.

Egwene: Too early for breakfast?
Tam: [chuckles softly] Never too early for your mum's bread.

Egwene looks around.

Tam: He left before I woke.

Egwene looks distressed but smiles for Tam.

Perrin and Laila lie in bed. Perrin is still asleep. Laila takes his hand and cuddles against his side.

Padan Fain sets up his goods for display on his wagon and Mat approaches him.

Padan Fain: [chuckles] Mat Cauthon. My best and poorest customer.
Mat: Seems like I'm your only customer.
Padan Fain: So, what do you have for me this year?
Padan Fain: Oh. Oh, dear. Not real gold, sadly.
Mat: Yes, it is. It's worth three marks, at least.
Padan Fain: Mm. Possibly. But will I be able to sell it here in town?
Mat: [scoffs]
Padan Fain: I'll give you one mark.
Mat: Two.
Padan Fain: Half a mark. That will get you three lanterns, and you'll be lucky to have 'em.
Mat: You're a right bastard, Padan Fain.
Padan Fain: Pleasure as always.

Moiraine and Lan walk through the village green, looking at the people, who look at them.

Moiraine: You didn't sleep last night. You think one of the Eyeless is already here? ... Then we both have work to do today.

Scene 17 : Mountainside

Rand sits alone on the side of the mountain. Egwene comes over and sits beside him.

Egwene: Thought you might be here.

Rand smiles at her, but his smile fades.

Rand: When I come up here... you know what I wonder about? I wonder about my life here. In the Two Rivers. About the house I'll build. The wife I'll have. About my kids running through these woods, just like I did.
Egwene: [inhales deeply] I'm going to...
Rand: I know. I already know.

Egwene sniffles and he puts an arm around her.

Scene 18 : Sacred caves

Moiraine: They call you a leader in this town, Wisdom, and here you are, cleaning.
Nynaeve: This pool is sacred. It's an honor to clean it. What are you doing here?
Moiraine: I wanted to walk.
Nynaeve: In the Two Rivers.
Moiraine: I could ask the same of you. You're not from here, are you? The old Wisdom brought you here when you were a baby... a baby whose parents passed. But no one can remember exactly when. That's the thing about these little towns, no one keeps records of anything. Births, deaths...
Nynaeve: It doesn't mean we don't remember. That old Wisdom... the woman who raised me... When she was only 13, she realized she could listen to the wind, and she went to the White Tower. She walked. From here. It took her months. And when she got there, your sisters took one look at her ragged clothes, her peasant accent, and they turned her away. She was small and from a little town, but she remembered. Until the day she died. So do I.
Moiraine: See, people say you're too young to be the Wisdom, and I disagree. I think you're strong, even if you have only had that braid for, what... what, a year or two?
Nynaeve: I've had it for five.
Moiraine: So that makes you 25... 26.
Nynaeve: That doesn't mean I can't do my job. And whatever you may think, that is to protect this town. From you, if I have to. Enjoy your walk.

Scene 19: In front of the Inn

Mat brings over three drinks for him, Perrin, and Rand.

Mat: Cheers, boys. Made it through another year of this shite.
Perrin: [chuckles]
Mat: All right. Out with it.
Perrin: Out with what?
Rand: Nothing.
Mat: Bollocks. Something happened with Egwene.
Perrin: What happened?

Rand doesn't answer.

Mat: That bad, was it?

Rand drinks.

Scene 20 : Bridge

Egwene stands on a bridge over a river. A tear falls down her cheek. She looks over as Nynaeve approaches. The wind rustles the trees around them.

Nynaeve: Do you hear that?

Egwene closes her eyes and listens. The wind intensifies, and there's an ominous sound of whispering voices.

Egwene: It sounds... wrong. What does it mean?
Nynaeve: I don't know. I've never heard anything like it.

The ominous sounds on the wind continue.

Scene 21 : Forest

Lan walks through the woods. He finds sheep slain and laid out in a peculiar shape.

Scene 22 : Village green

Moiraine is in her room in the Winespring Inn, looking out through her window at the village green. She looks down at the three boys talking.

Perrin: Mat, we noticed your luck wasn't really with you last night. So Rand and I chipped in. To buy some lanterns for the girls.
Mat: We'll be all right.

Perrin pushes the coins forward. Mat accepts.

Mat: Thank you.
Rand: All right. I should get home.
Mat: Don't stay up-mountain too long.
Rand: I won't.

Moiraine watches Rand walk away.

Scene 23 : Lantern lighting

Rand and Tam return to their farm on the mountainside. That night, they put up and light a lantern.

Rand: Maybe we should be at Bel Tine. To light a candle for her.
Tam: Whole point is to help guide her spirit back to us. Doesn't matter where we are when we do it, really.
Rand: How long does it take before the Wheel of Time turns someone's spirit back into the world again?
Tam: Wish I knew. But I'm sure there's a reason no one can remember their previous lives. All we can do is the best we can with the life that's given to us. And take comfort from it. That no matter what happens, what... pain we face... what heartbreak... even death... the Wheel keeps turning. Always. And we try again. Maybe do a little better than the last time.

Down in the village, villagers light lanterns and float them down the river. Egwene pushes a lantern out to join with the others. Mat hands a lantern to his mother to place in the river. Mat hugs his sisters. Both girls place their own lanterns into the river. Perrin holds Laila as they watch the lanterns. Nynaeve places a lantern in the river, and wipes tears from her eyes.

Scene 24 : Village Green

Villagers return to the green.

Marin: Come on, now. If we want our loved ones' souls to make their way back here, we'd best show them something worth coming back for.

Upbeat music begins playing, and the villagers cheer. Everyone begins dancing. Egwene grabs Perrin and Laila's hands and pulls them forward to dance.

Egwene: Come on. [laughs]

Perrin and Laila begin dancing and they laugh. Mat dances with his sisters. Padan Fain watches them from his wagon and laughs. Egwene dances with her father. Nynaeve smiles.

Scene 25 : River

Moiraine still stands by the side of the river.

Lan: The Fade has Trollocs with it. Dozens. We need to leave. Now. Do you know which one of them it is?
Moiraine: No.

Scene 26 : Village green

Egwene is happily dancing with a young man named Tom Thane. Tom suddenly stumbles forward into her, wide-eyed.

Egwene: Tom? Tom, what's wro...

She looks down, noticing a edge of an axe protruding through his chest. He falls forward, revealing the axe in his back. A massive creature, a trolloc, steps forward. The people scream and scatter as more appear, attacking. Everybody, including Egwene, screams and tries to fly away.

Nynaeve : [grabbing Egwene] Get down.
[both panting]
Egwene : Nynaeve, what's happening? What are they?

Scene 27 : Forge

Laila, Perrin and some villagers reach the forge to be safe.

Perrin : Who are they?

Scene 28 : Village green

Mat: Mum. Dad. Where are the girls?
Natti: They... they were right here. I...
Mat: Where are the girls?!
[screams]
Villagers : Help me! Help me!

Nynaeve and Egwene pull a bleeding man to safety.

Nynaeve: Put pressure on it.

She tourniquets the wound.

Nynaeve: Hey. There. It's stopped. It's stopped.

She and Egwene look out at the attack. People run screaming. Bodies lie on the ground. Trollocs continue attacking.

Scene 29 : The al'Thor farm

The lantern is still lit. A horse neighs outside. Rand and Tam prepare dinner inside. The neighing suddenly stops and the men look up. They approach the door cautiously when it's smashed in and a trolloc enters.

Rand: Dad, what is that?
Tam: [grunts] Rand! Run!
Rand: Dad!
Tam: Hey! Over here!
[Trolloc gurgles when Rand kills him]
Rand: Dad? Dad. Are you all right?
Tam: [panting] I'm fine. It's a Trolloc. You need to get out of here. [gasping] You need to leave. Go
Rand: No. I'll get you to Nynaeve.

Scene 30 : Eamond's Field

A trolloc runs at Nynaeve and Egwene. Nynaeve draws her dagger and stands before it. He snarls at her. Nynaeve screams back at it. It attacks and they attack it back, but it pushes them back. It raises its weapon to strike when a swirl of light wraps around it, pulling it apart. The women look over to see Moiraine and Lan in the middle of the battle. The attack was from Moiraine.

Nynaeve: Dear Light.

A trolloc approaches Moiraine and she attacks with fire. Lan strikes down trollocs with his sword.

Elsewhere, a group of women surround a trolloc with farm tools like rakes.

Daise: You want a real feast? Come and get some of this.

The women attack together, bringing it down.

At the forge, Perrin and Laila and others run in.

Perrin: [to the other villagers] Go, go!
Laila : [to a villager] Take my hand. Go.
Perrin : Laila, run.

Mat runs through the village.

Mat: Move!
Bode and Eldrin: Somebody help us!
Mat: Hey. Hey. It's all right. I've got you. I've got you. I've got you. Don't worry. All right? Remember when we played hide-and-seek?
Eldrin and Bode: [nodding] Mm-hmm.
Mat: Yeah? Big oak in the woods. Let's go.

They run off.

Perrin and Laila fight a trolloc in the forge.

Outside, Nynaeve is taken by a Trolloc.

Egwene: [screaming] Nynaeve!

In the forge, Perrin and Laila kill their ennemies but, after he killed his own, Perrin murders accidentally his wife.

Perrin: No. Laila. No. Laila. I'm sorry. Oh.
[panting] - [gasping]
Perrin: Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. [panting]

Outside, Egwene stills mourning Nynaeve when her mother arrives.

Egwene: Nynaeve!
Marin: Come on. Come on
Egwene: [crying] Nynaeve.
Marin: Come on, come on, come on.

Marin pulls her away from the battle.

Moiraine and Lan continue their attack. A trolloc throws a weapon, striking Moiraine in the shoulder. Lan catches her as she falls.

Lan: There's too many.

Moiraine looks at him. He helps her stand and she pulls the weapon from her shoulder.

Moiraine: Light give me strength.

Moiraine unleashes a massive attack, pulling stone from the Winespring Inn to smash into the trollocs, decimating them. The Winespring Inn collapses behind her, and she collapses. Lan runs to catch her and shields her from debris.

Scene 30 : Eamond's Field - The next morning

Before dawn, Rand walks into town. He's leading his horse with Tam slumped over its back. People are crying. Bodies are laid out and being carried on stretchers. The wounded are being treated. Marin looks up from treating the wounded and sees them.

Marin: Egwene.

Egwene turns from a woman she's helping and sees Rand. She exhales in relief and runs to him. They embrace.

Rand: Thank the Light. My dad. He needs help. Where... Where's Nynaeve?
Egwene: She's gone.
Rand: Can you help him?

She gives a small nod and waves over her father to help.

Egwene: Quick.

Bran helps Rand carry Tam to sit down.

Mat walks back into town, carrying one of the girls and holding the other's hand. Natti and Abel are sitting together, and Natti sees them.

Natti: My babies.

Natti runs to them.

Bode and Elrin: Mum!
Natti: My baby girls. You're all right.
Bode and Elrin: Mummy. Mummy.
Natti: Oh, thank the Light. Thank the Light.

Mat looks away and sees Perrin carrying Laila.

Mat: Perrin! Perrin?

Mat walks over to him.

Rand looks over from his father's side, where Marin and Bran are with him. Perrin lays down Laila's body. Mat kneels beside him and puts a hand on Perrin's shoulder.

Egwene brings Moiraine over to Tam.

Moiraine: It's Trolloc poison.

Marin and Bran help Tam sit up. Moiraine reaches forward and heals the wound. She exhales shakily, exhausted. Tam's eyes focus and he looks up at her. Rand squeezes his hand.

Moiraine stands and walks away. Rand follows.

Rand: You show up, then these things the next day.
Moiraine: They're here for the same reason as I am. For you. For the four of you. Twenty years ago, there was a woman at the White Tower. An Aes Sedai born with eyes so white, she couldn't see anything. Yet still she saw. Glimpses of the turning of the Wheel. The Dark One is waking. His whispers are already in the backs of our minds. But there will be one who can stand against him. The Dragon has been born again. And it's one of you.
Mat: You've fully lost your mind.
Moiraine: [chuckles softly]
Lan: Moiraine.

They look up the mountainside. There's Trolloc screeching in the distance. A series of lights are seen on the mountain.

Egwene: What are those?
Moiraine: The Dark One's army. More Trollocs.
Lan: Three hundred at least. How did they get here so fast?
Moiraine: Get the horses.
Egwene: What? You can't leave.
Moiraine: You're coming with me. The four of you. Your life isn't going to be what you thought. You've lived too long in these mountains, pretending that what happens in the rest of the world won't affect you.
Rand: We can't just leave.
Moiraine: They're after you. They will follow you. And if you stay here, this is where they'll come. They will leave nothing and no one standing, and I can't do anything to stop them. Our only chance is to reach the White Tower and the other sisters of the Aes Sedai. There's no time. We leave now.

The six of theme leave the town on horseback. Mat looks at his parents and his sisters as he leaves. Egwene and Rand look back at their parents, Marin leaning against Bran and holding Tam's hand. Tam smiles and nods to Rand.

Moiraine (voiceover): The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

As they ride from the village, the Trolloc army descends down the mountain behind them.
